If you’ve never been to a sound bath, the idea can feel a bit unknown. Will you have to do anything? Sit cross-legged? Chant? The honest answer is no. A sound bath is one of the most relaxed, low-pressure things you can do, and there is genuinely nothing to get right.
Here’s exactly how a session with me tends to go, so you can arrive knowing what to expect.
Packing
Comfort is everything, so wear something warm and cosy that you can completely relax in. If you can, bring a mat to lie on, a blanket to keep you snug, and a cushion or two for behind your neck and under your knees. Anything else that helps you feel at ease is welcome too – a favourite scarf, an eye pillow, whatever soothes you.
And please don’t worry if you don’t have any of these to hand. Just let me know when you book and I’ll happily bring them along for you. All you really need to bring is yourself.
Arriving
You arrive, take off your shoes and find a spot. Most people lie down on their back, but if that doesn’t suit you, sitting is completely fine. There’s no right position. There’s only comfortable.
What actually happens
Once everyone is settled, I begin to play. I use Crystal Tones Alchemy singing bowls, Grotta Sonora gongs and chimes, building up slow layers of sound that fill the room. You don’t have to focus, empty your mind or “meditate properly”. You simply lie there and listen. Many people find their thoughts wander at first, then gradually quieten as the sound carries them along.
It’s completely normal to drift in and out, to feel deeply relaxed, or even to fall asleep. However your body responds is the right response – you can’t do it wrong.
How you might feel afterwards
Sessions usually last around an hour. At the end, I bring the sound down slowly and give you a few quiet minutes to come back to the room in your own time. People describe feeling calm, a little dreamy, lighter, or pleasantly heavy and rested. Some feel wonderfully sleepy that night. There’s no single “correct” experience.
There is nothing to prepare, nothing to perform and nothing to get right. You lie down, and you let the sound do the work.
A few practical things
- Wear something comfortable. Layers are ideal – you cool down when you’re lying still, and you’ll want to feel cosy.
- Come as you are. No experience, flexibility or special breathing technique needed. First-timers are very welcome.
- Let me know about anything relevant. If you’re pregnant or have any health concerns, just mention it when you book and we’ll make sure you’re comfortable.
That’s really all there is to it. If you’ve been curious but unsure, take this as your gentle nudge: come along, lie down, and give your mind an hour off.
